Simle answer for me was , to not change to LED befor my low energy consuming bulbs give up !

I do not give a sh$te to reduce an households usage by milli Kwh and to replace working light bulbs and then to invest into newer LED bulbs to throw the old working ones into the dump

And there Billi, is the "missing contextual info" for all the people who having forked out megabucks for smart bulbs at dumb prices, thinking they need to do it all over again.

I only saw this energy anomaly & questioned it the other day (though the energy rating was a misprint on a website) for the same reasoning as yourself.

Clearly magazines & news papers aren't that bright unless it is copy & paste botch reporting.
Need to find a graph comparison of say 10 bulbs old & new.

So the EU introduced new energy efficiency ratings for lamps.

The new ones are much simpler as they are basically based on lumens per watt.

Just like GCSE and A level grades, there has been lots of grade inflation/efficiency improvement and the new ratings take this into account as lamps which were previously A+++ now can be rated anywhere between A and G. Thus it is possible to easily identify efficient LEDs and inefficient ones.

No big deal and perfectly sensible.

The time to ram lumens per watt home to the public was when LED bulbs first came out & the tech was young but improving output every 4+ months, ...we'd be home & dry now rather than late to the party with this info years down the road, just like when they finally legalised bike LED's that we'd been using for years by then.

Honestly this is far too late.

Everyone just considered that LEDs were all super efficient as they were all better than A rated.

The reality is that most of the non smart ones are massively over-driven from their optimum current, increasing heat output and massively shortening their lifespan. Smart ones obviously necessarily use more power for the smarts.

I can't wait to actually be able to buy some decent LEDs. Philips already made the Dubai lamp (which we can't buy here), and it's nothing special, just LED filaments driven at lower current, and more of them.
For me it's not about how much energy they use, but how much of that energy is pushed into shortening their lifespan.

I bought a bunch of Phillips LED bulbs about 10 years ago. Funny looking things they were with large aluminium heat sinks and yellow “filters”. But they’re still going strong and they produce excellent quality light.

Something has gone wrong though. I hear the newer Phillips bulbs give crappy light and don’t last.

well , whyon earth should i take all those working 7-8 Watt Clf light bulbs out to replace them with 2-5 watt LED s ?

We've a selection of CFLs that will continue to be in use until they die, but I'm a sucker for flicker free high CRI fixtures so I'm constantly on the lookout for the best options for our most used rooms.

Our kitchen was all Philips Master ExpertColor GU10s in 4500k before we moved house, and it was fantastic. I suspect we'll end up with custom fixtures integrating under-driven high CRI LED tape in our current kitchen to get a similar but improved (and longer lasting - Philips ExpertColour have gone down the can) effect.

We need more detail on embedded energy & hours in use to negate build materials journey etc
Sadly an led lightbulb doesn't have the same cache of interest as when the break even point in miles.of an ev, ..but we may as well as using ourselves with the latest thoughts & sums, because you tend to have to counter a good few generations of clarkeson-o-philes opining.
