I was off on Thursday and it was 0deg C outside. I measured a few temps in the house- Victorian build.

Spare room- 100mm PIR in wall and coom ceiling of roof.
IR surface temp reading 18 degC

Son 2 room, 1 pir in wall in dormer surface temp 18deg C
Coom ceiling 7deg c ( he’s off to Paris with school next year so away for a week and that’s pencilled in to be upgraded.

My room, dormer and coom not insulated at all, temp 5deg C.


I did rock wool under floor and saw a 3/4 Deg uplift a dozen years ago, now need to finish bits off and think a membrane for preventing wind washing will help further.

Cheers AGT, huge difference in temperature. Thank you. Great to see figures like that. I plan to do the two walls with 25mm insulation board and a layer of 12,5mm pb. That'll be a February job. The underfloor I'll be thinking about over Winter. Fortunately the hatch for access is in a cupboard so won't cause disruption.

Guys are not here today for ashp so going to commence a DEEP clean of the van and test the ehu. It has a LB but I'll have to look into that later. First big ticket item is the replacement of of double glazed (polycarbonate).window which is badly cracked/split. It's a £500 item plus p&p.

I'm going to look into polycarbonate fuseable chemicals and a flexible clear sheet stickyback overlay for the outer window skin. If that doesnt work I'll pay for the new window. If anyone has a caravan/RV breakers near them it's a 1999 Ford Transit based Autosleeper legend and it's the drivers side rear window I'm looking for.

The van cost me £9k, I reckon I'll spend £2k on it to bring it up to where I want it for safe reliable off grid capable Euro travel. Definitely work to be done on the 12V side of things as we have led's and ceramic heaters these days. I liked Stinsy's idea of a 4 pack of LF280's supplying a few kWh's of stored power run off the alternator. These vans go for £14k up to an eye-watering forecourt shiny dealer price of £23k. There's also a roof rack of some type. I wonder what size panel it would take?



There's a huge amount of space inside compared to the Bongo, this van has serious potential to be our longterm travelwagon. A Autosleeper installed split system on gas/ehu for water, fridge freezer, cooker, toilet & shower. If most of that works we are golden If it doesn't, we'll work out what we actually need and do our best to shift gas to fallback.

Had it power washed in Glasgow yesterday, what came off it was frankly ridiculous So it begins!

Gas meter removal this morning.

Literally tons of copper have went in under the floor yesterday. Everything is armaflex'd, the guys are going back in there today to hopefully complete pipework. Although I can see it running into tomorrow.

We've went from 22/15/10 of indeterminate run lengths to 28/22/15 with the onus being on getting as much 28 in as we can and extend the 22 out as far as possible before dropping down to 15.

No idea how much I'm adding to the final payment and probably best that I don't know at the moment or I might back off.

This way I'll KNOW we did the best we could and the SCOP will be whatever it can be. No lieing awake at night hacked off that I cut a corner or three.

Hopefully maximise efficiency and know we reduced pipe run lengths by wall mounting the unit and ensuring microclimation is not going to be an issue. Well that's the idea anyway..

Been wandering past copper pipes for days. I asked yesterday to keep the old danfoss thermostats and lockshields (for a pal). They were running on 10mm pipe. I kept looking back at the pipe really surprised at how small it looked.



That led me to thinking about area and increased flow rates. Check this out.

10mm dia pipe = 78.5mm2
15mm dia pipe = 177mm2
22mm dia pipe = 380mm2
28mm dia pipe = 616mm2
